Tinubu Renames Kaduna University After Shehu Yar'Adua

President Bola Tinubu approved the establishment and renaming of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources in Kaduna State to General Shehu Musa Yar'Adua University. This decision was announced during a nationwide broadcast on June 12, 2026, as part of activities marking Nigeria's Democracy Day.

Tinubu explained that the renaming recognizes the late General Shehu Musa Yar'Adua's significant contributions to Nigeria's democratic journey and his long-standing advocacy for national unity and political stability. The late General Yar'Adua, who was the elder brother of former President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua, played a crucial role in the pro-democracy movement during the political transition surrounding the June 12, 1993 elections.

Tinubu's announcement also paid tribute to various democracy activists who contributed to the struggle for democracy in Nigeria. A full list of individuals recognized will be made public on the day of the official Democracy Day honors rollout.
