Tinubu Suspends Cashless Airport Toll System Amid Gridlock

President Bola Tinubu has suspended the cashless payment system at airport toll gates across Nigeria, following significant gridlock that resulted in passengers missing their flights. The announcement was made by Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo during a Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday.

The President expressed concern for the welfare of Nigerians, noting that many were affected by the traffic delays caused by the new cashless system, which had been implemented less than a week prior. Keyamo emphasized that the primary reason for the suspension was to eliminate the gridlock experienced at the Lagos and Abuja airport toll gates.

The President directed the Ministry to revert to the previous system while developing a more efficient solution. The government plans to engage the private sector to establish an electronic revenue collection system that will not create traffic congestion.

The cashless system was intended to reduce corruption and improve revenue collection but led to massive traffic jams, with reports of passengers spending hours in traffic.
