Cashless Payment System Causes Flight Delays at Lagos Airport

On a recent Sunday, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) implemented a cashless payment system at the toll gate of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos. This transition led to severe traffic congestion, with vehicles experiencing long delays.

Travelers, including Mr. Bassei Udosen, who intended to catch a flight to Uyo at 3:15 PM, were caught in a gridlock that began building around 7 AM.

Many motorists were unaware of the cashless requirement and brought cash, leading to confusion and frustration at the toll gate. The toll gate officials informed drivers that cash payments were no longer accepted, forcing them to use access cards instead.

As a result, numerous passengers missed their flights due to the delays caused by the new payment process. FAAN officials acknowledged the need for better public communication regarding the cashless system, which is intended to streamline operations but has currently resulted in significant inconvenience for travelers.
