Kano Assembly Moves to Impeach Deputy Governor Gwarzo

On Thursday, the Kano State House of Assembly commenced impeachment proceedings against Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo, alleging gross misconduct and breach of public trust. The motion, presented by Lawal Dala during a plenary session led by Speaker Ismail Falgor, cites violations of Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.

Allegations against Gwarzo include receiving kickbacks totaling N462 million from 44 local government councils between June 2023 and January 2024, and an additional N726 million during a subsequent period. The Assembly claims Gwarzo facilitated the release of N440 million to Novom Pharmaceutical Limited, violating Kano State's public procurement laws.

Gwarzo has been given two weeks to respond to the allegations, or he risks facing full impeachment proceedings. This political maneuver follows Governor Abba Yusuf's recent defection to the All Progressives Congress, which has led to significant political realignment in the state.
