Kano Senator Rufai Hanga Resigns from NDC

Rufai Hanga, the senator representing Kano Central Senatorial District and Deputy Minority Whip of the Senate, resigned from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on August 3, 2026. His resignation letter, addressed to the Chairman of the NDC in Dakata Ward, Nasarawa Local Government Area, indicated that the decision was made after “careful reflection and personal deliberation.” Hanga's departure comes after weeks of speculation regarding his political future, particularly following meetings with President Bola Tinubu, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, and senior leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Despite the NDC's appeals for him to stay, he cited personal commitments as the reason for his resignation. Hanga lost the NDC's consensus ticket for the 2027 Kano Central Senatorial District to former Deputy Governor Nasiru Gawuna, contributing to his dissatisfaction within the party.

He requested the removal of his name from the party's membership register and expressed gratitude to the ward leadership for their support.
