Kano State Reports 6,573 Street Beggars Amid Poverty Crisis

A recent survey conducted by the Kano State Bureau of Statistics (KSB) has revealed that there are 6,573 street beggars in Kano State, with a significant concentration of young people among them. The Director General of KSB, Suraj Sulaiman, stated that the findings indicate that the prevalence of street begging in Kano is largely driven by youth vulnerability, poverty, and unemployment, along with limited access to education.

Sulaiman emphasized that poverty remains the leading factor contributing to the high number of street beggars, while low levels of education play a significant role. He noted that addressing these social problems requires targeted interventions to tackle underlying issues rather than superficial measures.

Furthermore, Sulaiman reiterated the importance of regulatory compliance in statistical activities within the state and warned organizations against conducting independent surveys without proper authorization. In response to these findings, Governor Abba Yusuf has declared a state of emergency in education, introducing interventions aimed at addressing the root causes of vulnerability among children and youth in the state.
