Sonay Kartal Reaches First WTA 1000 Semi-Final in Wuhan

Sonay Kartal achieved a significant milestone by defeating fifth seed Elina Svitolina 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in the quarter-finals of the Wuhan Open. The 24-year-old Briton made a strong comeback after being sidelined for over six months due to a stress fracture in her back.
Since her return to competition, Kartal has won six of her eight matches. In the match against Svitolina, she won the first set comfortably, lost the second, and secured the deciding set to clinch the victory.
This win follows her earlier successes against Italy’s 15th seed Jasmine Paolini and Switzerland’s ninth seed Belinda Bencic. Kartal's next challenge will be against 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, who advanced by defeating 11th seed Diana Shnaider 7-6 (8-6), 6-1.
The semi-final, which will be Kartal's first at a WTA 1000 event, is scheduled for Saturday.
