Journalists Urged to Report Religion Responsibly in Nigeria

On Monday, a breakfast dialogue organized by Konrad Adenauer Stiftung in Abuja focused on the role of media in reporting religion and its impact on democracy in Nigeria. Moritz Sprenker emphasized that religion is a powerful force shaping political identity and public discourse, making responsible media reporting crucial.

He warned that reducing complex situations to binary religious conflicts risks overlooking deeper causes and potential solutions. Sprenker called for journalists to prioritize accuracy, context, and careful language to avoid exacerbating community tensions.

Alex G. Rlach, a political scientist and columnist, highlighted the need for a new ethical framework in reporting religion, urging journalists to provide depth in their coverage.

Dapo Olorunyomi, Chief Executive Officer of the Central Journal of Innovation and Development, echoed these sentiments, stating that Nigeria's democracy requires a more rigorous approach to faith reporting.
