Media Training in Sokoto Focuses on Responsible Reporting

Media practitioners in Sokoto State participated in a training program focused on responsible reporting, organized under the Resilience, Engagement, and Conflict-Prevention for At-Risk Populations’ Protection (RECAP) Project by consortium partners in collaboration with the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID). The initiative, led by Programme Manager Sunday Momoh Jimoh from International Alert, aimed to strengthen the media environment amidst security and socioeconomic challenges in Sokoto.

Jimoh highlighted that unemployment and poverty are significant drivers of conflict, urging journalists to reflect these realities in their narratives. The training covered conflict-sensitive journalism, verification, gender-sensitive reporting, and the media's role in peacebuilding.

Dr Muhammad Abdullahi, Conflict Advisor at International Alert, emphasized the need for survivor-centered reporting, cautioning against victim-blaming and sensationalism. The panel discussions included representatives from government and private media, stressing the importance of evidence-based reporting that impacts public policy.
