Dangote Group Prepares for Legal Battle Over Kenyan Refinery

The Malindi Environment and Land Court has ordered that the status quo be maintained on disputed land in Lamu County, Kenya, until October 14, when the case will be heard. The order, dated September 25, allows Dangote Group to proceed with its groundbreaking ceremony for the refinery, although activities may be affected due to the court's directive.

Aliko Dangote stated that his company is ready to defend its interests legally, referencing a previous legal challenge in Senegal that ended in the group's favor. The court declined a request from 133 residents of Chandavai, who claim ancestral rights to the land, to halt the groundbreaking ceremony.

These residents argue they have occupied and cultivated the land for generations and are seeking recognition of their rights, compensation, and resettlement. President William Ruto is expected to attend the ceremony, with the Kenyan government supporting the refinery project, which aims for a capacity of 700,000 barrels per day.
