Gbenga Hashim Warns of Under-Reported Killings in Nigeria

Gbenga Hashim, a former presidential candidate, expressed alarm over the dangerously under-reported killings in Nigeria, stating that the violence occurring across the country is not fully reported. In a statement issued on Sunday, he noted that approximately 40 people were reportedly killed in the past week in Shanga Local Government Area, with the death toll rising due to ongoing attacks in Kwara State, which left between 20 to 50 people dead, including five forest guards. Hashim highlighted that Benue State saw 50 to 100 fatalities within a week, while Plateau State recorded 30 to 80 deaths from coordinated night attacks. He pointed out that Niger State had 20 to 50 deaths, and Nasarawa State experienced 10 to 20 fatalities. Hashim warned that the real danger lies in the normalization of these killings, which are often absorbed into daily life with little sustained outrage. He criticized the inadequate response from global bodies like the United Nations and the African Union, emphasizing that Nigeria's long-standing role in international peacekeeping has not garnered the necessary concern from other nations.
