Underreporting of Killings in Nigeria Raises Alarm

Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, a former presidential candidate, has expressed grave concerns regarding the underreporting of mass killings across Nigeria. He warns that the growing global silence on these incidents reflects a dangerous devaluation of human life. In a statement issued on Sunday, he pointed to persistent attacks in several regions, particularly noting a recent incident in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State where 40 people were reportedly killed within a week. He indicated that the actual casualty figures may be significantly higher. Olawepo-Hashim highlighted similar attacks in Kwara State, where between 20 to 50 people were killed recently, and noted that violence in Benu State and Plateau State resulted in 50 to 100 deaths and 30 to 80 deaths, respectively. He criticized the muted response from the United Nations and the African Union, emphasizing that the ongoing killings have not attracted the necessary national or international outrage.
