Kogi State Launches Forest Guards to Combat Insecurity

Kogi State has initiated a Forest Guard program to address insecurity, particularly in forest corridors that serve as bases for kidnappers and bandits. Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo described this initiative as part of a broader security framework aimed at restoring public confidence and protecting communities.

The program is implemented under the Presidential Forest Guard Programme in collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the Department of State Services (DSS). Kogi's strategic location, bordering 10 states and the Federal Capital Territory, makes it crucial for trade and movement, thus insecurity impacts both residents and interstate commerce.

The initiative aims to enhance forest surveillance, intelligence gathering, and response times to criminal activities, ultimately reducing attacks on farming communities. The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, stated that the Forest Guards would bolster security and support state policing.

The Kogi State Security Adviser, Commander Jerry Omodara (Rtd), emphasized the need for proactive security measures and inter-agency coordination. The success of the initiative will be measured by improved safety and increased agricultural output.
