Kwankwasiyya Movement Raises Alarm on Nigeria's Democracy

The Kwankwasiyya Movement has issued a statement warning of emerging threats to Nigeria's democracy, citing concerns over judicial inconsistencies and the conduct of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The spokesperson, Habibu Moham, highlighted the recent leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and INEC's decision to suspend recognition of a faction of the party as indicative of deeper problems within the country's political system.

The movement noted that similar internal crises are affecting opposition parties, including the People's Democratic Party, Labour Party, and New Nigeria Peoples Party, with judicial interventions often leading to contradictory procedures that prolong leadership disputes and create uncertainty. The statement criticized the growing disregard for established legal principles, particularly the doctrine of stare decisis, and raised concerns about the conflict of court orders.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement accused INEC's leadership of reinforcing public distrust and questioned the commission's commitment to democratic values, emphasizing that democracy cannot thrive if political parties weaken judicial authority and electoral bodies are perceived as complicit in undermining political competition.
