Kwankwaso Advocates for Government Intervention in Fuel Prices

Rabiu Kwankwaso, the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), announced the party's plan to consider government intervention to lower petrol prices, including investments in refineries. During an interview with Arise TV, he addressed the ongoing fuel subsidy debate and the positions of major opposition figures ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Although NDC's presidential candidate, Peter Obi, opposes a return to traditional fuel subsidies, Kwankwaso emphasized that the party would pursue its own methods to make petrol more affordable. He pointed out that if private individuals can build refineries, the government should also invest in refining capacity.

Kwankwaso stated, “We, in the NDC, will do whatever it takes, really, to put the price of oil down.” This discussion follows former Vice President Atiku Abubakar's proposal for a targeted production subsidy for domestically refined petroleum products, advocating for government support focused on domestic refining rather than imported fuel.
