Mbappe stated, “Being compared to people who murder others, or who have made millions upon millions of people miserable… I don’t think I’ve done that in my life.” He recognized that the meme was not necessarily intended to offend but highlighted the lack of understanding regarding the political and human consequences of such figures.

Additionally, he addressed the nickname “Mobut,” used by his France teammate Ousmane Dembele during the 2026 World Cup, clarifying that it was a light-hearted reference to Mobutu Sese Seko, the former dictator of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
