Nigerian Institute Sounds Alarm on Environmental Vulnerabilities in Lagos

The Nigerian Institute of Environmental Engineers (NIEE) has highlighted the environmental risks facing Lagos, urging decisive action to tackle challenges such as coastal flooding, plastic pollution, and groundwater contamination. During their annual general meeting themed "Blue Economy: Driving Lagos State's Future," key figures like Nureni Ogunyemi and Azeez Agoro emphasized the opportunities presented by a blue economy but also warned about existing issues like plastic waste, oil spills, and weak governance.

Government officials like Femi Idowu Adegok stressed the importance of aligning development with sustainable ocean governance and implementing comprehensive strategies for a thriving blue economy in Lagos. Initiatives such as the coastal protection project and Africa's first domestic carbon market were also highlighted.
