Lagos and California Partner on Climate and Innovation

The Lagos State Government has established a formal sister state relationship with California, marked by the California State Assembly's concurrent resolution 129. This partnership, unveiled by Assembly Member Matt Hanei during the California Africa Climate Economic Forum 2026, aims to enhance collaboration on climate resilience, transportation infrastructure, and economic development.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's executive secretary, Jermain Sanwo-Olu, described the agreement as a framework for practical cooperation. The partnership aligns with Lagos' agenda to strengthen global engagement and open new channels for sustainable trade and innovation.

It is expected to drive investment and knowledge exchange, fostering long-term collaboration. Tok Omishakin highlighted the significance of this agreement in promoting cooperation between the two regions.

California Governor Gavin Newsom emphasized the shared commitment to people-centered progress, aiming to deepen ties between Lagos and California while addressing common challenges such as climate change and urbanization.
