Lagos Police to Handle Sowore's N30m Damages Payment

The Lagos State Police Command is currently managing the payment of N30 million damages awarded to human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, as disclosed by police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin. This follows a Federal High Court ruling that declared the actions of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police unlawful and a violation of Sowore's fundamental rights.

The court's decision, delivered on November 3, 2025, found that the police had not complied with the judgment, prompting Sowore to express frustration over the situation. Hundeyin clarified that the judgment specifically named the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, as responsible for compliance.

Sowore's legal battle stems from accusations of public disturbance related to protests in the Oworonshoki community, which the police claimed were unjustified. The ongoing issues highlight a pattern of police hierarchy's reluctance to comply with court orders, raising concerns about the enforcement of justice in Nigeria.
