Lagos State Launches $500M Education and Healthcare Program

On Wednesday, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced a $500 million human capital governance program in collaboration with FCMB and the World Bank. This initiative marks a shift from traditional government spending to a results-based financing model, where funds will be released upon verification of specific improvements in basic education and primary healthcare.

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the program is designed to ensure that every naira spent translates into better living conditions for Lagos residents, particularly in providing children with access to quality learning materials and mothers with quality care at primary health centers. The program aims to enhance public resource management transparency and has already shown visible early gains in tracking student learning outcomes and healthcare delivery efficiency.

Akin Onimol from the World Bank noted Lagos's commitment to strengthening its procurement framework, while FCMB's CEO Yemisi Edun highlighted the partnership's role in driving social equity and supporting community development. The initiative is expected to mature by 2025.
