Lagos, World Bank, FCMB Launch $500M Education Initiative

The Lagos State government, alongside the World Bank and First City Monument Bank (FCMB), has initiated a $500 million program aimed at strengthening basic education and primary healthcare systems in Nigeria. This initiative is designed to enhance human capital opportunities and promote equity across the country, impacting all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu highlighted early gains in education and healthcare delivery, emphasizing a shift towards performance-based spending. Akin Onimol, a senior procurement specialist at the World Bank, noted the program's focus on addressing long-standing structural gaps in service delivery.

FCMB's Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Yemisi Edun, stated that the bank's involvement reflects a broader commitment to expanding access to opportunities for children and communities. The program aims to ensure that children receive the necessary learning materials and that mothers have access to quality care at primary health centers, with a strong emphasis on transparent resource management.
