Lagos State Orders Flood-Prone Residents to Relocate

On September 21, 2026, the Lagos State Government issued a directive for residents in flood-prone communities, specifically Ajah, Kirikiri, and others, to relocate to higher ground. This order was communicated through a statement from the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, signed by Director of Public Affairs Kunle Adeshina on behalf of Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab.

The directive follows a seven-day flood alert from the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), which covers Lagos and 14 other states from September 19 to 25. Wahab identified several vulnerable areas, including Eti-Osa and Lagos Island, urging residents to move early to avoid severe flooding.

Residents were advised to remain vigilant and follow safety advisories, particularly those living near rivers and other water bodies. The government is intensifying monitoring of these communities and has emphasized the importance of proper waste disposal to mitigate flooding risks.
