Nigeria Issues Flood Alert for 2,000 Locations Nationwide

The federal government of Nigeria has placed 2,000 locations across 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on flood watch, with 914 communities classified as critical-risk areas. This alert was issued by the National Flood Early Warning Systems Center (FEWSC) of the Federal Ministry of Environment.

The warning indicates that heavy rainfall, saturated soil, rapid surface runoff, overwhelmed drainage systems, and rising river levels could lead to widespread flooding. The forecast categorizes 914 locations at critical risk, 430 at high risk, and 656 at moderate risk.

Northern states, particularly Adamawa and Taraba, are highlighted for heightened exposure, with specific communities listed. Other northern states such as Kebbi and Niger are also under watch, alongside various locations in the South, including Rivers State, which has a significant concentration of critical-risk areas.

The government has urged communities in critical categories to maintain flood watch and take protective measures.
