Lassa Fever Death Toll Reaches 252 in Nigeria

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reported that the death toll from Lassa fever has risen to 252, with the case fatality rate increasing to 24.4%, surpassing the 18.6% recorded in 2025. The latest cases were documented between August 10 and August 16 in Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, and Benue states.

During this period, 14 new cases were identified, marking an increase from four cases reported in epidemiological week 32, which saw cases primarily in Ondo and Edo states. Cumulative infections reached 1,021, with 240 deaths and a case fatality rate of 23.5% by week 32.

This figure indicates a decline from 17 confirmed cases in week 31, highlighting fluctuations in weekly transmission. As of week 33, 23 states have reported at least one confirmed Lassa fever case across 117 local government areas.

The NCDC emphasized the importance of ongoing surveillance and response activities, as Lassa fever remains a significant public health concern in the affected regions.
