Lassa Fever Fatality Rate Rises in Nigeria Amid Case Decline

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reported a rise in the Lassa fever fatality rate to 24.8% during week 14 of 2026, despite a decrease in weekly confirmed cases from 26 to 22. This increase is concerning as it reflects a worsening outcome in disease management, with the fatality rate rising from 18.8% recorded during the same period in 2025.

Cumulatively, Nigeria has recorded 170 deaths from Lassa fever in 2026. The report indicates that 22 states and 94 local government areas have confirmed cases, with five states accounting for 84% of total infections.

Bauchi has the highest burden at 27% of confirmed cases, followed by Ondo at 22%, Taraba at 18%, Edo at 9%, and Benue. Other affected states include Plateau, Ebonyi, and Kogi.

The ongoing geographical spread of Lassa fever across multiple regions underscores the persistent challenges related to early detection, timely treatment, and health-seeking behavior in affected communities.
