Lassa Fever Outbreak Claims 10 Health Workers in Benue

In Benue State, ten health workers have succumbed to Lassa fever amid a severe outbreak, as disclosed by state epidemiologist Dr. Msuega Asema during a visit on Friday, February 3.

The outbreak has significantly affected frontline workers, including five medical doctors, four nurses, and two community health extension workers. A total of 250 suspected cases have been reported, with 45 confirmed cases leading to ten deaths among health personnel.

Dr. Paul Ejeh Ogwuch, during the visit, urged residents to remain calm while the government mobilizes resources to contain the outbreak.

The governor, Hyacinth Alia, has committed to ensuring necessary resources are available. Health officials are intensifying infection prevention measures and have called for urgent upgrades to isolation centers and waste management systems.

Prof. Michael Agbir described the situation as unusual compared to previous years, while Prof.

Joseph Kontor highlighted issues with power supply affecting laboratory services. Currently, ten patients are admitted, including eight confirmed cases and two suspected cases.
