Lassa Fever Outbreak Claims 35 Lives in Taraba

In Taraba, Lassa fever has led to the deaths of 35 individuals, as reported by Dr. Suleiman Abubakar Kirim, head of the clinic.

A total of 226 patients suspected of having Lassa fever were admitted for laboratory testing, with 95 confirmed positive for the disease. Out of these, 20 patients were successfully treated and discharged.

Dr. Kirim also disclosed that three staff members at the medical center, including a doctor, a nurse, and a driver, contracted the disease; the doctor and nurse have recovered, while the driver is still undergoing treatment.

This outbreak has resulted in the highest number of deaths recorded at the center in recent times. Dr.

Kirim expressed appreciation for the support from the federal and Taraba state governments in managing and treating Lassa fever patients. He advised residents to maintain a clean environment as a preventive measure against the disease, which is primarily carried by rats.
