Young Doctor Dies from Lassa Fever in Benue State

Dr. Cedric Tyoor Kondom, a recent graduate and member of the APIN Public Health Initiatives, died from Lassa fever in Benue State after a two-week struggle with bone marrow failure.

The state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Paul Ogwuch, confirmed the case and announced that health authorities are embarking on contact tracing to manage the outbreak.

Dr. Kondom was initially treated at a private hospital before being transferred to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, where he succumbed to the disease.

His burial took place on Saturday, June 20, 2026, in his hometown in the Kwand Local Government Area. The medical community is mourning his loss, with Dr.

Msonter Anzaa describing it as devastating. The state government is enhancing surveillance and public health campaigns to prevent further spread of the virus, as fresh cases have been reported.
