Lawmaker Raises Alarm on 2027 Poll Credibility Issues

A member of the House of Representatives from Ogbaru, Anambra State, Ogen, has expressed serious concerns regarding the credibility of the upcoming 2027 general elections. In an interview on Wednesday, he criticized the recent amendments to the Electoral Act, specifically the 2026 amendment bill signed by President Bola Tinubu.

Ogen described the amendments as a fait accompli that undermines the electoral process. He highlighted the inclusion of a fallback clause that allows for physical transmission of results, arguing that this provision could diminish transparency and public confidence.

Ogen also referenced previous assessments by the Nigerian Communications Commission, which indicated that poor network coverage could hinder electronic transmission. He urged lawmakers to reconsider the bill's provisions without broader legislative scrutiny and emphasized the importance of maintaining public faith in the democratic process, encouraging Nigerians to remain actively engaged.
