Nigeria's House of Representatives sat on Thursday, 29 January 2026, with a packed agenda headlined by the second reading of the 2026 Appropriation Bill worth ₦58.47 trillion. Lawmakers also took up a motion to reopen and fix specific clauses of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill that was passed in December 2025. The biggest item was the second reading of the 2026 Appropriation Bill (HB.2682), which seeks to authorise total federal spending of ₦58.47 trillion. Of that amount, ₦15.9 trillion is earmarked for debt service, ₦15.25 trillion for recurrent non-debt expenditure, ₦23.21 trillion for capital projects, and ₦4.1 trillion for statutory transfers.
Lawmakers were also asked to consider a motion to rescind and recommit specific clauses of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, which the House passed on 23 December 2025. The motion, sponsored by Hon. Francis E. Waive, targets clauses dealing with multiple party registration, forum shopping after primaries, and penalties for offenders.
Two bills were scheduled for Committee of the Whole consideration: one amending the Electoral Act to cover FCT Area Council elections, and another proposing a new National Assembly Infrastructure and Property Agency.
Two committee reports on National Assembly pension and service administration were also listed for consideration. The sitting concluded with a valedictory session honouring Dr. Yahaya H. Dan Zaria, the outgoing Clerk of the House.
