On Wednesday, 28 January 2026, the Nigerian House of Representatives met to consider the 2026 Appropriation Bill, which proposes total federal spending of ₦58.47 trillion for the year ending 31 December 2026. The bill covers debt servicing, recurrent costs, statutory transfers, and capital expenditure. Three House committees were also scheduled to hold separate meetings the same afternoon.
The Nigerian House of Representatives sat on Wednesday, 28 January 2026, with the main legislative business being the Second Reading of the 2026 Appropriation Bill (HB.2682), sponsored by the House Leader.
The bill proposes to authorise a total withdrawal of ₦58.47 trillion from the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the Federation. The proposed spending is broken down as follows: ₦23.21 trillion for capital expenditure, contributed to the Development Fund; ₦15.91 trillion for debt service payments; ₦15.25 trillion for recurrent non-debt expenditure, which covers government operations and salaries; and ₦4.10 trillion for statutory transfers to bodies that receive automatic allocations under the constitution and other laws.
Before the Order of the Day, the sitting also included routine opening items such as prayers, the national anthem and pledge, approval of previous proceedings, oaths, and the opportunity to receive messages from the President, the Senate, and other parliaments, as well as petitions and matters of urgent public importance.
Three committee meetings were scheduled for 3:00 p.m. the same day: the Rules and Business Committee, the Public Petitions Committee holding an investigative hearing, and a joint session of the House Committee on Digital and Information Technology and the Senate Committee on Information Technology, meeting with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.
