NULGE Urges Tinubu to Enforce Local Government Autonomy

The National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has called on President Bola Tinubu to implement the Supreme Court ruling from July 11, 2024, which grants financial autonomy to Nigeria's 774 local governments. The Supreme Court's unanimous decision, led by Justice Emmanuel Agim, mandates that local government councils receive their allocations directly from the Accountant-General of the Federation, declaring it unconstitutional for state governments to retain these funds.

NULGE President General, Comrade Aliyu Kankara, stated that the delay in implementation should not be blamed on state governors and urged the President to act urgently to prevent further development deficits in rural areas. He emphasized that local government autonomy impacts all Nigerians, not just workers.

Additionally, the Nigeria Governors' Forum, represented by Dr Yunusa Tanko Abdullahi, clarified that the disbursement of funds to local councils is now solely the Federal Government's responsibility, as established by the Supreme Court ruling.
