Singapore's PM Wong Becomes World's Highest-Paid Leader

Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong is set to become the highest-paid political leader in the world with an annual salary increase from S$2.2 million to S$3.6 million, which represents a rise of more than 60%. This increase will provide Wong with an additional S$1.4 million annually.

Wong has pledged to donate this increase to charity over the next five years, defending the pay rise as necessary to attract talented individuals into politics. The announcement has drawn criticism due to concerns regarding job security, retrenchments, and the rising cost of living in Singapore.

Following Wong, Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee is the second-highest-paid leader, earning approximately $719,000 annually, while Switzerland's President Guy Parmelin ranks third with an annual salary of about $606,000. The U.S.

President earns $400,000 annually, significantly less than Wong's new pay package. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham earns $230,000 annually.
