Singapore Unveils $70,000 Child Support Package

On August 23, 2023, Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong introduced the SG Child Support Package, which will provide nearly $70,000 in financial support for every Singaporean child from birth until age 17. This significant overhaul of family assistance replaces existing schemes that varied by birth order.

The package includes a $10,000 Baby Gift, $32,000 in Child Credits disbursed annually from ages one to 16, and a $5,000 Child Development Account (CDA) First Step Grant, with potential additional government contributions. Upon turning 17, children will receive an additional $10,000 for their Post-Secondary Account.

Existing benefits, such as the $5,000 MediSave Grant for Newborns, raise the total support to approximately $70,000, a notable increase from the previous range of $27,500 to $56,500. The new package will also apply to children aged one to 17 in 2026, with transitional arrangements for those on older schemes.

Over 610,000 children from around 380,000 households are expected to benefit.
