Bauchi Livestock Forum Urges Regulation of Antibiotic Use
At the maiden Bauchi Livestock Stakeholders’ Engagement and Capacity Building Forum held at the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria Secretariat in Bauchi, experts warned farmers against the indiscriminate use of antibiotics in livestock. Salisu Abubakar Buba, State Chairman of the Nigerian Association of Animal Health and Husbandry Technologists, highlighted the critical role of animal health technologists in livestock extension services and disease control.
Dr Muhammad Sani Mu’azu from the Federal Polytechnic Damaturu stressed the dangers of unregulated antimicrobial use, which could threaten human health through contaminated animal products. Dr Ahmed Isah Ahmed, Provost of the Bauchi State College of Agriculture, discussed antimicrobial resistance as a significant threat and advocated for a 'One Health' approach involving various stakeholders.
The forum, organized by NAAHHT and other partners, called for the employment of animal health technologists across Bauchi State to address staff shortages and improve livestock health and production.
