Nigeria's Livestock Sector GDP Hits N3.23 Trillion
The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, announced that the livestock sector's contribution to Nigeria's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has risen to N3.23 trillion. This statement was made during an appearance on Trust TV’s Business Daily programme.
The Federal Government established the Ministry of Livestock Development to formalize and modernize the sector, aiming to unlock its economic potential. Maiha mentioned the consolidation of existing livestock policies into the National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy, which comprises 10 pillars, alongside a National Livestock Master Plan with a 15-year trajectory.
He noted that the livestock sector is valued at approximately $32 billion and emphasized the government's efforts to enhance productivity and develop the livestock value chain. The number of states with dedicated livestock ministries or agencies has increased from three to 21.
The government is promoting Livestock Development Centres through partnerships with state governments and the private sector, focusing on genetic improvement, animal health, and biosecurity. Maiha also highlighted the need for sustainable practices, stating that nomadism and open grazing are no longer viable due to conflicts and productivity issues.
