Nigeria Launches Livestock Centres to Boost Economy

The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled plans to create state-specific Livestock Development Centres to enhance the livestock sector's economic contribution from $32 billion to at least $74 billion by 2035. This initiative, announced by the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, during a press briefing in Abuja, is part of the National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy (NL-GAS) approved by the National Economic Council.
The NL-GAS features a 10-pillar roadmap aimed at eliminating systemic bottlenecks and attracting substantial private investment. The Federal Government will oversee national policy, technical standards, food safety, and animal health protocols, while state governments will provide land, infrastructure, community engagement, and security coordination.
States will determine which livestock species or value chains to develop after consulting with local stakeholders. The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development will offer expert advice and regulatory coordination, while producers and investors will finance and operate the commercial components of the initiative.
