ISWAP Bomb-Making Specialist Surrenders in Yobe State

On June 8, 2023, two senior members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), identified as Ismail Moham and Abu Umar, surrendered to troops from the 159 Battalion in Geidam, Yobe State. This event is regarded as a major breakthrough in the ongoing military efforts against Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents throughout the Lake Chad region.

Abu Umar is noted for his expertise in creating vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs), which are commonly used in high-profile attacks against military targets and civilian areas. His involvement in the logistics of bomb-making is considered crucial for the terrorist organization.

The surrender of these individuals is expected to provide valuable intelligence to security agencies, including the locations of bomb manufacturing sites and training camps. The second insurgent, Ismail Moham, is linked to the notorious Baa Shuwa area, which has been a strategic stronghold for insurgents in the northeast.
