Major Nigerian Banks Roll Out Google Pay as Digital Wallet Competition Heats Up

FirstBank, UBA, GTBank and ProvidusBank have integrated Google Pay, letting customers make contactless payments via smartphone wallets.

Nigeria's banking sector is expanding digital payment options as several lenders have begun supporting Google Pay, Google's mobile wallet service that launched in the country on October 27, 2026. FirstBank, United Bank for Africa, Guaranty Trust Bank and ProvidusBank have all activated the platform for qualifying customers, enabling them to link their payment cards to compatible Android devices and complete transactions without handling physical cards.

The rollout allows eligible cardholders to store their bank cards within Google Wallet and tap their phones at payment terminals to settle purchases. ProvidusBank has specifically enabled Mastercard integration on the platform, building on its previous work with Mastercard and security firm Thales on card tokenisation technology that began in 2021.

The bank expanded these capabilities in 2022 through a tap-to-pay partnership with Mastercard and Interswitch. The expansion introduces fresh competition to Nigeria's established fintech payment services, including Paystack and Flutterwave, particularly in online checkout and in-store transaction channels.

Google Pay's arrival marks another step in Nigeria's shift toward cashless and contactless payment methods, with the service designed to simplify everyday transactions for millions of smartphone users across the country. Customers interested in using Google Pay must have compatible devices running Android or Wear OS, eligible payment cards issued by participating banks, and access to the Google Wallet application.

The service provides security features to protect card information during transactions. FirstBank, UBA, GTBank and ProvidusBank are currently the financial institutions offering the service to their customer base.
