European Leagues Demand Major FIFA Reforms Amid Governance Issues

The Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A, and LaLiga have collectively called for major reforms at FIFA, emphasizing the need for tougher safeguards and a distinct separation between the business and regulatory aspects of world football. This demand was made public on a Friday following FIFA President Gianni Infantino's decision to rescind proposals that would allow external investors into FIFA's commercial operations, which faced widespread opposition.

The leagues expressed that governance issues have compromised the integrity of the game and insisted that stakeholders must have a genuine voice in significant decisions. They stated, “The FIFA President has finally recognized that reform is necessary – but that is not sufficient for superficial, procedural changes to be considered in the wake of FFE.” Additional demands include establishing a permanent organization that includes national associations, leagues, clubs, and players from both men's and women's football.

Relations between FIFA and Europe's top leagues have deteriorated over recent years, particularly regarding the expansion of international tournaments and the resulting strain on players. Infantino has proposed an independent external review of FIFA's membership structure and discussions with stakeholders as he campaigns for re-election.
