Makinde Raises Alarm Over 2026 Electoral Act Delay

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde raised alarms regarding the delay in accessing the 2026 Electoral Act, which was signed by the president two weeks ago. Speaking at the Obafemi Awolowo Lecture 2026 held at Efunyela Hall in Ikenne Remo, Ogun State, Makinde lamented that despite public discussions, the official document has not been readily available for thorough public scrutiny.

He stressed that Nigeria's long-term development relies on achieving genuine consensus among the country's political elite and called for a true federal accord to reflect the principles long advocated by the late nationalist leader, Obafemi Awolowo. Makinde urged Nigerians to confront the nation's challenges decisively, noting that the current circumstances largely shape the collective choices made by leaders and citizens.

He reaffirmed his support for a vibrant multi-party democratic system and expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation across the country, warning that failure to address these issues could lead Nigeria toward prolonged instability similar to that experienced by the Democratic Republic of Congo.
