Makinde Prepares to Select Successor for Oyo 2027 Election

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has initiated preparations to choose his successor for the upcoming 2027 governorship election. In a newsletter dated April 2026, he revealed that his administration has already started consultations with selected individuals as part of a transition process aimed at sustaining the state's progress.

On March 21, 2026, Makinde directed his advisory council to engage with gubernatorial aspirants within the People's Democratic Party (PDP), led by senior advocate Bolaji Ayorinde. The council is tasked with meeting aspirants to suggest suitable candidates who can continue the administration's agenda, known as Omituntun 3.0.

Notable figures expressing interest in the race include Adedeji Olajid, Nureni Adeniran, Bimbo Adekanmbi, Debo Akand, and Adebo Ogundoyin. While no specific date has been set for the announcement of the candidate, a consensus arrangement is expected to be made public around April 8, 2026.
