Court Acquits Aliyu Abubakar and Others of Corruption Charges

On October 16, 2026, Justice Inyang Ekwo of a Federal High Court in Abuja discharged and acquitted businessman Aliyu Abubakar and seven others from charges of money-laundering, criminal misappropriation, and forgery concerning the management of Malabu Oil and Gas Limited’s funds. In two separate judgments, Justice Ekwo determined that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) failed to substantiate its case against the defendants.
In the first judgment, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/268/2016, the court ruled that the prosecution was incorrect to proceed with charges after the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) issued a directive in 2018 stating there was insufficient evidence for prosecution. In the second judgment, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/31/2017, the court found that the allegations against Abubakar, the sole defendant in that case, were also unproven.
Notably, former AGF Mohammed Adoke was initially part of the charges but was previously acquitted after a no-case submission ruling on April 19, 2024.
