Nigeria's Malaria Prevalence Drops to 15% with New Plan

The Federal Government of Nigeria announced a reduction in malaria prevalence from 20% in 2010 to 15% in 2025 during the commemoration of World Malaria Day in Abuja. Dr.

Iziak Adekunl Salako, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, revealed the new five-year national malaria strategic plan for 2026-2030, which aims to further combat malaria. The plan, developed in collaboration with state governments, focuses on addressing the unique realities of different states and communities.

It aligns with the national health sector strategic blueprint and aims to reduce malaria parasite prevalence and mortality by 50% by 2030. Key initiatives include the distribution of 500 million insecticide-treated nets since 2015, seasonal malaria chemoprevention across 21 states, and the rollout of malaria vaccines starting December 2024.

The World Health Organization's representative emphasized the need for sustained investment and innovative leadership to achieve malaria elimination.
