Mali Defence Minister Sadio Camara Killed in Attacks

On Saturday, Mali's Defence Minister Sadio Camara was killed in a series of coordinated terror attacks carried out by jihadist separatist forces, specifically the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), which is affiliated with Al-Qaeda. The attacks included the detonation of vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices outside Camara's residence and involved gunfire in the capital, Bamako.

Reports indicate that Camara sustained injuries during the assault, but sources later confirmed his death. This incident is considered a major blow to Mali's military government, which came to power following a coup.

The Malian military confirmed the attacks, stating that the assailants suffered immediate setbacks. Gunfire and explosions were reported in Kati, near Mali's main military base close to Bamako's airport, leading authorities to shut down the airbase as a precaution.

Unverified reports suggested that a military helicopter may have been downed. The U.S. embassy in Mali has advised against travel due to the deteriorating security environment.
