Man Flogged to Death for Alleged Rape of Minor in Bayelsa

In Bayelsa, a man was reportedly flogged to death after being accused of raping a minor. The incident occurred on a Wednesday when the deceased received 40 strokes of cane, part of a traditional punishment that prescribes 120 strokes for such offenses.

The community, known for its customs, gathered to administer the punishment, which was seen as a deterrent against sexual offenses. The victim, whose name was withheld, was allegedly ambushed while with her aunt near a farm.

Following the flogging, the man fainted and was later confirmed dead. Local youth insisted on adhering to tradition despite attempts by some individuals to intervene and offer monetary compensation.

The chairman of the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Mr. Segibo, confirmed the incident, and the Bayelsa State Police Command is currently investigating, with three other individuals arrested in connection to the death.

The council condemned the actions of the community youth, emphasizing the importance of reporting crimes to authorities rather than taking the law into their own hands.
