Domestic Airlines Face Collapse in 30 Days, Onyema Warns

Allen Onyema, the Vice Chairman of the Airline Operators of Nigeria and Chairman of Air Peace, issued a stark warning that many domestic airlines in Nigeria could face collapse within the next 30 days if the Federal Government does not urgently address the significant challenges confronting the aviation industry. Speaking at the launch of the book "Pathways, Pilgrimage & Destiny: The Biography of Alhaji Muneer Bankole" in Lagos, Onyema described the aviation sector as capital-intensive yet less rewarding, highlighting the existential threats airlines currently face.

He cautioned aviation unions against planned picketing over the non-remittance of the five percent Ticket Sales Charge, stating that such actions could lead to a suspension of operations by other domestic carriers in solidarity. Onyema lamented the harsh operating environment, noting that over 50 airlines have shut down in the past, and emphasized that while airlines are not opposed to helping the government generate revenue, a more sustainable approach is necessary.
