NDLEA Chairman Calls for Nationwide Support to Combat Illicit Drug Cultivation

Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa, the Chairman and Chief Executive of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), is urging broad support for Nigeria's newly introduced alternative development program to address illicit drug cultivation. The initiative, the first of its kind in Africa, aims to tackle the root causes of illicit drug production by providing sustainable economic opportunities to affected communities.

Marwa highlighted the success of the pilot scheme launched in three cannabis-producing communities in Ondo State. The program seeks to promote rural economic growth, enhance food security, and reduce pressure on law enforcement and the criminal justice system.

Marwa emphasized the need for a shift from enforcement measures to development-focused interventions, citing the significant drug challenges in Nigeria, particularly related to cannabis cultivation.
