Tinubu Declares Insecurity, Poverty National Emergency

On May 1, 2026, President Bola Tinubu declared insecurity and poverty a national emergency during the Workers' Day celebration at Eagle Square, Abuja. He stated that these issues pose serious threats to job production and Nigeria's overall stability.

In his address to thousands of workers and labor leaders, Tinubu acknowledged that insecurity and poverty remain significant obstacles to national development. He assured that his administration would tackle these challenges with urgency and coordinated actions.

Key initiatives include recruiting 45,000 young Nigerians to strengthen community security, expanding cash transfer programs to reach 15 million vulnerable households, and implementing major infrastructure projects expected to create 600,000 jobs nationwide. Tinubu also announced the introduction of a new national minimum wage and the reintroduction of gratuity payments in January 2026.

He emphasized the need for a multi-dimensional approach to poverty alleviation, focusing on job creation and economic diversification, while urging sustained dialogue to resolve industrial disputes.
