Surge in Petrol Prices Strains Nigerian Households

The recent escalation in petrol prices across major Nigerian cities, including Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and Kaduna, has raised prices to between N1,020 and N1,100 per liter. This increase is attributed to rising global crude oil prices and escalating transport costs, which have significantly impacted the cost of living.

Commercial transport operators have begun adjusting fares, with reports indicating increases from N400 to N500 for certain routes. Ekundayo Oladimeji, a commercial bus driver, confirmed that fares have already risen due to the increased cost of fuel.

Additionally, food prices have surged, with traders reporting sharp increases in the cost of agricultural products like pepper and tomatoes, driven by higher transport costs. For instance, a small bag of pepper now sells for N82,000, up from N18,000, while tomatoes have also seen significant price hikes.

Residents are expressing concern over the ongoing trend, particularly as Ramadan approaches, fearing further increases in fuel prices and transport fares.
